Our approach to design is based on a collaborative, inclusive, and rigorous process where we listen to the stakeholders thoughts and requirements, and translate them into a built project.  The form of a project is born from these interactions with clients and stakeholders and results in a facility that is uniquely tailored to the community it serves.

Architecture

Through our 50 years of cumulative experience Abstract’s principals have been involved in projects of all sizes and complexities at an airport.  These include smaller projects which focus on airline relocation, concessions, airline clubs, offices and other building types on an airport’s property.  Our principals have also lead and designed large terminal renovations and expansions ranging from concourse expansions to new green field terminals.   These larger projects have ranged in cost from $80M to multi-billion dollar programs.   The scale includes concourse widening or extensions to complete international terminals of 9,000,000 SF in size.

PAX 360℠

PAX 360℠ is our systematic approach to the planning and design of airports and related transportation facilities. By prioritizing the passenger over all other concerns, we create common ground for stakeholders to discuss priorities and reach agreements and decisions quickly. Security, operations, maintenance, revenue generation, and baggage systems; on their own these are separate concerns and dimensions of airport design. Seen through the lens of the passenger’s experience we can put them in relation to each other. By putting the passenger at the center of all our decisions, we can build a framework through which we can design each of the separate systems and bring them together into a meaningful whole.

The result:

  • Deliver award winning designs while maintaining the budget and schedule.

  • Responsive design unique to the needs of each airport.

  • Flexibility to changing operational demands.

  • Proactive tracking of industry and technology trends.

  • Rapid response to new opportunities and risks.

  • Fast and flexible, iterative development of design options.

  • Clear process for analyzing and evaluating new information.

  • Supporting an efficient and informed decision‐making process.

  • Quick deployment and rapid project initiation.

  • Meaningful feedback and stakeholder involvement to reduce risk and uncertainty.

Terminal Planning

Our principals' experience extends to the planning and layout of terminal complexes. They have a deep understanding of the interconnected nature of the terminal within the larger airport site.  This experience includes coordinating the terminal complex with aircraft parking layouts, taxilane/way network, vehicle services roads, ground service equipment (GSE), as well as airside facilities such as MRO, cargo, and support buildings.  Our landside experience includes the integration of road networks, retail amenities, office buildings, administrative facilities, hotels, parking, ground transportation centers, and mass transit stations. Theis experience spans from reconfiguration of an existing terminal to deal with the evolving nature of the aviation industry to the planning of new head houses or concourses to provide additional capacity.

Interior Fit-Out

Whether it's fitting out a terminal building, or refreshing specific areas to enhance passenger amenities or modify airport operations; the team has experience in the renovation of existing terminals through modernization programs and club renovations as well as new fit-out of shell space through consolidated tenant spaces, concessions, and operations space.

Feasibility Studies

Airport terminals respond in complex ways to changes in operational requirements. The time needed to plan and implement projects means that a robust feasibility study is a critical bridge between planning and project design. A feasibility study is more that an analysis of how a project can be successfully completed. It is a tool for clients and stakeholders to consider the opportunities and challenges represented by the project. It needs to go beyond testing the viability of the project and tease out potential obstacles and operational challenges. The extensive experience of our principals in airports of varying sizes, operating in different geographies, and under normal and alternative forms of project delivery methods - gives us a unique perspective from which we can apply insight to the proposed project and collaborate with clients and stakeholders to outline an optimal strategy. One that leverages the opportunities presented while mitigating short and long term challenges.

Program Management

Through owner representation the team has extensive experience from the owner’s perspective on delivering programs.  The team has worked as owners representative to both airports and airlines in a design management role.  We have provided that service for terminal expansions as well as new construction of MRO and cargo facilities.

On-call Services

On-call design services represent the best opportunity to gain insight into the operation of a facility. Our principals have lead and participated in numerous multi-year on-call contracts to both airports and airlines. These long term commitments have been the basis of establishing a working relationship with clients and stakeholders. They are also the basis from which we engage larger projects, as our track-record, and the knowledge gained over the years of these on-call services allow us to develop unique and tailored solutions. The scope of these contracts included smaller architectural and engineering projects and typically include site work, structures and/or building systems. The services required vary for each task assigned; these included investigation of existing facilities, topographic surveys, location of existing utilities, geo-technical investigation, space planning, concept and design drawings, cost estimates, life cycle cost analysis, construction documents, construction schedules and phasing plans, support during procurement, and services during construction.
